# Access rules

> Choose who may read a file, a folder or part of a file, by setting the lowest level that can read it.

Access rules are for admins. A rule says who may read a file, a folder, or part of a file. Anything without a rule follows the computer's own setting.

## Add a rule

1. Open **Knowledge**, then **Access rules**.
2. Pick the computer. Rules apply to a computer's files, so set up a computer first.
3. Add a rule and choose the file or folder.
4. To limit a rule to part of a file, fill in the **First line** and **Last line**. Leave both empty for the whole file.
5. Choose **Who may read it**: the lowest level that can read it. People at that level or higher can. You can set levels up to your own. See [access levels](/docs/access-levels).
6. Save.

If there is already a rule for the same thing, saving changes its level.

## Change or remove a rule

Press **Change level** on a rule to change it. A rule can also be removed. The **Recent changes** list shows what was changed.

## Good to know

- Rules are applied on the computer. If they hit a problem, the app tells you and the computer tries again.
- Rules refer to paths. If a rule no longer matches any file, it is shown as unmatched.
- Changes to rules appear in [activity](/docs/activity-and-analytics).
